Notes about this web site: This site displays better in Internet Explorer...not sure why, but the text appears smaller in Firefox. Site was designed with a 800 x 600 window size in mind.

Unlike a conventional cam corder, photo finish basically takes a picture the size of a match sticks’ width. As the contestants cross the finish line, their picture is taken (average 800 frames per second but can go up to 10,000) in small pieces and “put together” by the software --which in turn is used to evaluate and assign times to the contestants. So, the narrow image on the right is what the camera sees at the lead edge of the finish line and the image on the left is what appears on the computer screen.
